Through our curriculum we aim to:


  • enable learners in our school to be ready to embrace new challenges and to embed the skills to become lifelong successful learners
  • encourage children to be confident, robust and independent learners who have the courage and confidence to be creative and imaginative and who take responsibility for progressing on their learning journey
  • inspire our children to develop a love for learning
  • raise aspirations and help children to understand their connections to, and place within our community and the wider world

Early Years Foundation Stage Framework

The children in the Reception class follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework. The framework is split into seven areas of learning. Three Prime areas of learning: Personal, Social and Emotional, Communication and Language and Physical Development. Four specific areas of learning: Understanding the World, Literacy, Maths and Expressive Arts and Design. Children will access the areas of learning through adult led and child initiated activities based on a half termly topic and with a focus on learning through play.

Colne Engaine’s Curriculum

Our own curriculum has been developed to include the statutory requirements of the subjects within the new curriculum, which are English, maths, science, PE, computing, history, geography, art and design, design and technology, music and languages. Children’s learning is enhanced and broadened with additional opportunities and experiences which make up the wider school curriculum.
At Colne Engaine, we follow a ‘theme-based’ approach to the curriculum. This means that wherever possible, we group our subjects around a topic. The topics we choose depend on several factors, including the areas of the National Curriculum we need to cover and topical events. We aim to make learning exciting and meaningful for children, through providing rich contexts for learning. We make links between subjects and aspects of learning in our
cross-curricular approach to learning. Where this is more difficult, subjects are taught discretely.

The mastering of basic skills in English and maths underpins our entire curriculum.


We believe that literacy skills underpin robust learning across the curriculum and supports life-long learning. We aim to equip children with the skills, knowledge, and understanding
necessary to foster a love of literacy which will stay with them.
With support from our parents and carers, we support children to
- speak clearly and confidently in a variety of situations
- listen actively and respond in appropriate ways
- read fluently for both pleasure and for gathering information
- write clearly and with confidence in any given format
- present their work using a joined cursive script
- learn and apply phonics and spelling rules
- be able to edit their own work and the work of others in order to make alterations that will improve their writing.
Learning to read at Colne Engaine begins with choosing from a wide range of engaging stories and information books to foster a love of reading and being read to. Daily synthetic phonics lessons using the Letters and Sounds programme marks the beginning of a child’s journey towards becoming a fluent and enthusiastic reader. This discrete teaching of phonics continues throughout KS1 and, where necessary, into KS2. Children are tracked and progress is measured on a half termly basis to ensure that extra support is given where needed to ensure that a sound phonic knowledge is embedded. In upper KS1 and lower KS2 children are taught phonics through the ‘Support for Spelling’ program. This involves teaching rules such as knowing how to add plurals, prefixes and suffixes. Through this method of teaching, the children learn how to recognise the sounds that make up words and how to apply this to real and unreal words, preparing them for the Phonics test at the end of Year 1. It will also support them as they progress to more demanding texts, helping  them to sound out unknown words.
Handwriting is a key literacy skill that needs to be taught actively through frequent, discrete lessons. We use the Nelson Handwriting scheme to promote joined and legible handwriting.
We believe that good handwriting is underpinned by developing the necessary fine and gross motor skills in readiness for handwriting and in our reception class the children join in
with a daily Dough Gym and Funky Fingers activity to build these fine and gross motor skills. For more information on Dough Gym and Funky Fingers please use this link:


The maths curriculum is based on the national curriculum for mathematics.
It aims to ensure that all pupils:

• become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual
understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
• reach the national expectation for their end of year with times tables. Being able to recallthem, out of order, with speed and accuracy. This will include them knowing their inverse operations for each times tables.
• reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language
• develop mastery/greater depth of the subject through explanations of processes, next step challenges and a deep understanding of the mathematics they are learning. This will lead to future learning that is built on solid foundations.
• can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.
This framework is used to plan tailored units of work which incorporate practical “hands on” experiences, games, ICT opportunities, group tasks, investigations and a range of real life contexts which develop both mathematical understanding and problem solving skills. Both written methods and mental skills are taught rigorously.

Other areas of the curriculum

We draw the content for each term of work for all subjects other than maths and literacy from the ‘Chris Quigley Essentials’ arrangement of the National Curriculum, which works  within ‘milestones’ of learning for KS1, lower key stage 2 and upper key stage two, which is appropriate for our mixed year group classes.

All learning experiences are rigorously identified in our Cohort files, so that we can ensure robust coverage. We have embraced the opportunities a new curriculum brings, without losing the elements of creating rich contexts for learning and a flexible approach.
We have chosen to teach Spanish to children in KS2, which the children access through lots of talk based activities, stories and games.
Religious Education
We are proud of our approach to teaching Religious Education, which is  predominantly enquiry led and uses well respected resources including Understanding Christianity and ExploRE. We teach Religious Education on a weekly basis and lessons focus on Christianity and units on other major world religions and faiths such as Sikhism, Judaism, Hinduism, Islam, Buddhism and Secular Humanism. We have a commitment to enriching understanding of the diverse and rich tapestry of religious beliefs in Great Britain, which includes a comprehensive visit programme for KS2 classes to a range of places of worship including Chelmsford Cathedral, The Baps Shri Swaminaryan Mandir and the Colchester Mosque.  Parents and carers do have a right to withdraw their child from Religious Education and, if desired, should write to the Head teacher to request that a child does not take part in Religious Education lessons.                                                                                 
Sex and Relationships Education (SRE) is delivered as part of our PSHE and Science curriculum and makes use of the Christopher Winters Project. Please see link attached.
Our policy for SRE is available on our website. Parents are entitled to withdraw their child from Sex Education but not the part of this that is covered by the Science Curriculum.
Parents should again put this request in writing to the Head teacher.

Preparing our children for Life in Modern Britain

We value the importance of preparing pupils for life in modern Britain. Pupils are taught about the importance of British Values through the PSHE & RE curriculum as well as through cross curricular opportunities and extended activities. We aim for our children to confidently and independently use and apply information technology skills to support, extend and enrich their learning; therefore ensuring they are ready and able to embrace the technological advances of the future.
Our children need to learn how to get hold of information, evaluate its suitability, store it, share it with others, and adapt it for their own needs. The children learn how to safely navigate the internet and communicate, as well as develop digital photography skills, use sound and video recording equipment and access a wide variety of software to develop their learning across the curriculum. We do this with our bank of laptops which are used by all children throughout each day as well as through our set of iPads. The children also have access to sensory equipment, bee-bots and roamers as necessary. In addition, children will need to have an understanding of programming (coding), to solve problems and to use in sequencing. We have a Coding Club run by an ambassador from StemNet.
Each classroom is fitted with interactive whiteboards, which the children learn to use. Each class also has an iPad, visualiser, and digital camera.


Sport is a high profile curriculum area across the school and is taught both by class teachers and a qualified Sports Instructor. Classes are taught on Games, Gym, Swimming, Dance and Athletics. There is a wide and varied range of extra-curricular sporting clubs with information available on the school website. Children also regularly take part in festivals and tournaments from Year 1 -6.
