At Colne Engaine we promote a school ethos whereby every child is known and appreciated, treated with respect and allowed their individuality. This ethos is underpinned by some fundamental beliefs that guide us in all we do and we work very hard to maintain it.

We believe that all children are different with a diversity of skills and experiences when they come to school and have the capacity to learn well whatever their starting point. They do this best through first hand experiences echoing as much as possible the first five years of their lives. It is enhanced by children having involvement and ownership of the learning processes and caring, confident, respectful relationships between teacher and child. Lastly a secure and trusting partnership between home, school and the community is essential to enable children to grow socially, emotionally, morally, spiritually and academically.

In 2003 the “Every Child Matters” agenda set out to achieve a situation in which every child,  whatever its background or circumstances, would have the support it needed to thrive.  There were seven principles, which we still consider crucial and which we aim to reflect in everything we do.

The seven principles state that every child should:

  • Stay safe
  • Be healthy
  • Achieve economic well-being
  • Enjoy and achieve
  • Make a positive contribution
  • Behave well
  • Develop spiritually, morally, socially and culturally.
